Joe,

I seem to remember a similar tube substitution and conversion to product
detection for a National 183d an issue of Electric Radio. You could
check one of the ER indexes online for the issue, or I'll see if I can
find it when I get home.

Dave, You have the very seldom seen NC-80 or NC-81X speaker. This is a very
rare item. The NC-100 speaker turns up more often but it can be pretty hard to
find also when you need one. This one? Almost never.

Electro Voice 621/Heath Desk Microphone
This is the brownish colored desk mic that matches fairly
late Heath equipment. Of course the microphone has a
silver colored screen on it. It looks like new, and is still
in its box with warranty card. I can not find a scratch
on it, nor does it have worn paint. $ 75

Turner 350 C hand microphone
This is a Hi Z ceramic hand microphone used on
many of the older rigs. It works fine, and looks
very nice. $35

Calrad DM-5 hand microphone
Similar to the Turner 350 C above, but a lighter
"off white" color. Hi Z. It works fine, and looks
really great. $ 30

Prices do not include shipping from Florida.

Thanks.

I have for sale a very nice hammarlund SP-200 Super Pro along with mating
power supply. I have fashioned a nice 5' power cable. The radio plays
beautifully and LOUD!

Front panel almost perfect! Original black cabinet with handle in
near-perfect physical condition but missing a little paint on top. I will
include a can of semi-flat krylon or black krinkle paint which will make
the cabinet appear new. I would repaint it myself, but I have some physical
limitations and the radio is too heavy for me to wrestle with all alone.
Includes nice copy of original manual.

Prefer pickup in Chicago area or will have a friend meet you halfway up to
100 miles from Chicago. I will include a square Hammarlund speaker (the one
with the art deco squiggly-line on the grill cloth). $500 obo. Thanks for
looking!

checked it out and it works. I had the matching tuner for this a year
ago and it too did not have a model number.

Subject: Swapping Hallicrafters Receivers?

I have recently purchased one S-85, one SX-99, and one R46 speaker.
(Acquired the S-85 because it looks like my SX-99 from teen years,
then came upon the SX-99/R46 set.)

All three are in good shape, though probably not candidates for a
collector seeking an as-new/perfect museum-grade rig.

I would really like to own and use a decent Halli. SX-100 since
it looks like the SX-99 but is a receiver I would actively use more
than the SX-99.

I would not expect the SX-100 to be pristine, though it does
need to be unhacked, reasonably intact cosmetically, and
fully functional.

In the gathered wisdom of this list would a direct swap of the S-85,
the SX-99, and the R46 for a SX-100 be a fair deal for both sides?

I don't wish to waste everyone's time pursuing such a swap if I am
expecting too much in return. I am only seeking to own three devices
(my first Zenith tabletop BC-SW radio, a Hallicrafters SX-100, and a
Drake TR7) -- I cannot justify adding cash to such a swap given that
it is about memories, not "collecting" or with any intent to resell
for profit.

Sure would appreciate informed input from the list!

Our company recently updated the server system and I managed to pickup the
power modules from each. I'm not even sure of the outputs but typically the
have something like +5vdc/75amps, +12/20, etc, etc. The problem is, I would
like to use them as stand alone supplies for my ham projects. I have not
been able to get a schematic or even a pin out of the back panel. It's a
fairly complex supply and even after tearing it apart, I haven't been able
to figure out how to turn it on. Obviously, its remotely controlled by the
server and with a miniature 38 pin socket, try to figure out what pins turns
it on. Does anyone have a schematic or just the pin out for a "Agilent
built, HP model D4292A" power supply. I've tried all the commercial surplus
manual suppliers and no luck. HP just laughs and Agilent gave me the names
of the manual suppliers. Tnx for your time and the space.

Subject: FS: SR-160 xcvr w/p.s. $190

Hi all,
I have a Hallicrafters SR-160 for sale. Operationally it is good, the
receive section is quite sensitive, the transmit section puts out ~130w
on 80 & 40m, and ~100w on 20m, depending upon load (antenna loading is
fixed). I have used it on 20m SSB some. The power supply is home made,
but it is a very close copy of the original in size, components, etc., and
very well done. It is in fair cosmetic condx, but looks like it may have
been operated mobile, there are some small holes in the cabinet, and a
dent at the right rear. One lever knob has been replaced with a twisted
wire lever. The speaker enclosure is included, and the supply can be
mounted inside it. I have put some pix on a webpage:
www.thecompendium.net/radio/SR160.htm
Price $190 plus shipping from zip 28560, 2 or 3 boxes.
Can deliver to the Raleigh, NC, 'fest on April 4.

Subject: Best Tube Transceiver?

I have had a change of heart from seeking a Hallicrafters SX-100
tube receiver to seeking a 100% tube transceiver.

My price range is what I can get for a SX-99, S-85, and R46 ...
OR a swap for all three.

I know that I can get a Heathkit SB-102 for a whole lot less
and have owned one in the past, it is a solid basic all-tube
transceiver but I need something with a few more features, esp.
on the receive side (sensitivity and selectivity are key).

I'd prefer 160-10m but would consider 80-10M.

What all-tube transceiver(s) would the gathered wisdom of the
folks here on the list have me consider, please?

First two responses were private and strongly recommended
the Drake TR-4C w/RIT.

I agree that is is an exceptional rig but what I need is
something as close as possible in performance that is 100% tubes,
no solid state devices at all.

I already own a Drake TR7 and a TenTec Jupiter and want to
complete the setup with an all-tube transceiver.

But it contains transistors, does it not? I need something
free of *any* solid state devices whatsoever.

Thanks for the suggestion, though. It is an excellent rig
as well.

Well, the Heath SB-102 is not fully tube since it has
a solid-state LMO.

Really, there isn't a fully tube-type transceiver that
has all of the features that you want. For example
the Collins KWM-2 series only has a single i.f. filter
(2.1 KHz) and it really isn't that good on CW (like
the 32S-1 can put out three signals if not properly
aligned and tuned). It does fine on SSB. With the
Waters Q-Multiplier (adds rejection tuning) it is
somewhat improved but although maybe "close", but it
definitely is not a "cigar".

The Heath SB-101 is all tube and does a pretty good
job (I have one that I use with a Hallicrafters HA-2
2-meter transverter). That is, all tubes except for
the power supply. In my opinion, it is better than
the SB-102 because the LMOs usually track better in
the "stock" configuration than the solid-state
versions.

If you include the power supplies, there isn't a
transceiver that I can think of that are fully tube
type. Even the Collins 516F-2 power supply has a
selenium rectifier in the bias supply.

My thought is that by the time transceivers were fashionable, semiconductors
were gaining popularity, so my guess is that it will be very difficult to
find an all thermionic transceiver. Any transceiver I can think of at least
has silicon or germanium diodes. Good luck searching, maybe we're missing
one.

I really appreciate the many suggestions so far -- here is
some discussion of my reasons and preferences to further
clarify:

I am no "suvivalist" but do live in a high lightning area,
thus EMP is an issue. Plus I'd just like to own a working
all-tube/no-semiconductor rig.

I like to have something available should all my lightning/
EMP protection systems fail and a surge disable my solid
state gear. (As we know, should a serious surge get into
the radio room most semiconductor devices in the room, even
disconnected from antenna, power, and shared ground, will
likely fail. I believe that a tube rig will not.)

I have read the EMP-protection assertions on this site
http://www.geocities.com/HotSprings/Falls/1984/newfact.htm
and will see about getting the report, but I'd like the
extra margin of error that a no-semiconductor rig offers.

I do no know how resilient IN34's are vs a tube device in
the same application.

A receiver-transmitter combo is also an option, even a
military tx-rx combo (? and a R-392) or a transceiver are
worthy of consideration, but they tend to be pricey

The Collins suggestions are fine but way way way outside
of the budget! (Note: I stipulated something equivalent
to the value of my S-85, SX-99, and R46. I'd have to
sell my car to afford Collins!)

I am mostly interested in SSB performance, CW tends to always
be an option for every rig, though it is not my preferred mode.

The rest of the family is almost ready to head off to
church so I will try to quickly squeeze in a couple of
observations:

The SB-101 sounds interesting, I will check it out.
I suppose I do not have to use the matching power supply,
there must be something with the same specs that is 100% non-semiconductor.

I'd hate to go through all of the trouble of acquiring
and optimizing a no-semiconductor rig only to have
something in the power supply fuse in the face of EMP!

OR, is it fair to say that the semiconductor devices
used in the matching SB-101 supply are of such high
tolerance that indirect EMP won't bother them?
