It's used to blow the 20 amp fuse in the DC output line; I believe it's
just a 35 amp 1/4" stud-mount SCR, and many SCRs rated at 35A or higher
can replace it if they'll fit on the board.

eg: NTE 5542 (35 amp) NTE 5567 (80 amp)

The short terminal is the gate, the long is the cathode, and the stud is
the anode.

NTE does not list a direct replacement, probably because its an obsolete
part, but you can get to an NTE equivalent via other cross-reference sites:

Dale Wentz's page at http://www.d8apro.com/heath3.htm

crosses the NL576A to a SPS135, which NTE does not list, but another
web site with a cross-reference page crosses that to the 2N3896:

    http://www.hutsonind.com/crossref.shtml

and NTE crosses that to their NTE 5542. NTE lists their distributors at

http://www.nteinc.com/NET_St_lst/Disty.html

Also, Mouser in Texas http://www.mouser.com

has the 5542 as their part #
526-NTE5542
for $9.63.

Frank,
I don't think you're gonna find a new can with those specs. You can
probably get a used one, but do you really want a used electrolytic? Your
best bet is to get individual electrolytics from a supply house like
Mouser and eliminate the big can. If you're like most and want to keep
the original "look", you can even hollow out the can and stuff it with
the new caps. Plan ahead and determine whether the radial or axial lead
varieties will work best (maybe using both types). I've done this with a
number of old rigs and it works great.

Subject: HT-40?

Hello Friends:

I picked up a Hallicrafters HT-40 transmitter.

It loads up ok...the only problem is the smoke coming from plate resistor on
the Modulator tube...and the overheated and cracked 7 watt resistor in the
power supply.....

The schematic I got with the rig has some significant different component
values.

Don't know if ' mickey mouse ' tried to fix it...or it's a legimate factory
mod....the number on my schematic is 089 - 002030 B.

Any and all suggestions are warmly welcome.

Tnx,
Steve

The two resistors across the caps in the power supply should be 10K at 10
watts. On the low voltage side, R29, should be 1K, at 2 watts. The "-B"
schematic has some minor component value changes over the original
schematic

Subject: F/S: 10" boat anchor speaker, 4 Ohms

I could not find a suitable speaker for my receiver, so I decided to
build my own. I bought a pair of stereo speakers ( they would not sell me
only one) And built my own enclosure from 3/4" MDF with glued and stapled
joints. There is a 10" low and mid-range speaker coaxially mounted with a
4" mid to high range. They are both 8 Ohms but when connected in parallel
the resulting impedance is 4 Ohms. The housing is 11-3/4" square with
1/4" added by the feet and 7-3/4" deep. Painted grey but repaintable to
match your equipment. Sounds good to me.

Since I had to buy 2 speakers, I made 2 of the above. I only need 1 so
the other is up for sale. I am asking $50 plus shipping. I have more than
that in it but I feel that is all a person would be willing to pay. Pix
available on request. Thank you.

Gentlemen,

I have found an oscilloscope to buy, by email through a friend. It is
described as a Heath Scope Model 10-40. I haven't been able to identify it.
I looked in BAMA, Heathkit Circuit Archive in England, and half-a-dozen
other places, as well as Google. No luck.

I've emailed my friend to ask the owner.

Meanwhile, anybody know what he's talking about and specs and prices?

Thanks, Tom KC5INU

Fred,
I can relate to your description of "glossy to primer flat". It seems that
there is not too much out there available in semi-gloss finishes.
There is another one that I found at one of the automotive supply stores
(Pep Boys I think).
 It is Dupli-Color DA1603 Semi-Gloss Black.
This has worked well to restore the bezels on some test equipment that are
niether gloss or flat but are in between.

Try the "satin" finish. That is about half-way
between gloss and flat. I use satin finish for all of
the computer matched paint that I get for boat anchor
cabinets from Sherwin-Williams. It usually looks
pretty much "right on" to the original finishes.

Most cans of spray paint are available in satin
finish.

You really want acryllic paints if you can find them
(they are available). I use acryllic latex from
Sherwin-Williams on the cabinets that I repaint. It
is much harder than enamel and still cleans up with
water.

Subject: Heath receiver performance numbers

Just for the sake of comparison, I've measured the
MDS (minimum discernable signal), TTDR (two-tone
dynamic range), and BDR (Blocking dynamic range)
of a few Heath receivers. Now there are some REAL
numbers to use in comparison to other rigs.
The numbers for the SB-303 and SB-104 were
measured by Sherwood Engineering, the rest where
measured by me here in my shop.

SB-301:
MDS -138 dBm
TTDR (20 Khz spacing) 83 dB
BDR (20 Khz spacing) 118 dB

SB-303:
MDS -135 dBm
TTDR (20 Khz spacing) 66 dB
BDR (100 Khz spacing) 104 dB

SB-104
MDS -123 dBm
TTDR (20 Khz spacing) 79 dB
BDR (100 Khz spacing) 92 dB

HW-101 (JKR/JCJ optimizing mods installed)
MDS -138 dBm
TTDR (20 Khz spacing) 82 dB
BDR (20 Khz spacing) 95 dB

HR-1680
MDS -137
TTDR (20 Khz spacing) 81 dB
BDR (20 Khz spacing) 105 dB

Since the SB301 and 300 are basically the same unit the
numbers should be about the same, the same would go for the
HW-101 and the SB-102.
The biggest departure from typical of the era performance in
these rigs is the lousy ultimate rejection of the I.F. filter which
is about 70 dB. It can also be seen that the SB-303 has way
too much gain, the SB-300/301 is actually a much better unit
in terms of overload resistance.
Keep in mind also that these numbers were taken on rigs that
are working perfectly and have had a good instrument alignment.

I have had pretty much the same performance on the
SB-301. However, my service monitor drops out of
"lock" at about -135 dBm! But, the SB-301 is still
"going strong" at that level. I get similar responses
out of my 75S-3A and one of my 75S-1 receivers. The
other 75S-1 drops out about -135 dBm just before the
service monitor drops out of lock! This is with the
internal attenuator. I could plug in an external
attenuator and get a better reading.

The SB-303 that I owned didn't get as good a MDS
reading as what you got. It tended to be a "bit"
noisey even when properly aligned.

well boys and girls...

after spending two weeks on this HW5400 yesterday, I have come to the
conclusion that the HW5400 is the most screwed up radio heathkit ever put
out on the ham market

ah.. but your thinking that perhaps this is just one rotten egg in the
basket.

well this is number three that I have owned. All have the same problems.

1. The thing clicks when the main tuning knob is turned. Although the
receiver is muted to prevent chirping as the PPL lock and unlock as you
tune. The receiver still has a slight click as you tune the knob.

2. Unbelievable ho-hum receiver. Forget about "working the weak one" with
this HW5400. Signals 4 khz away cause the agc to pump.

3. Really goofy and I mean GOOFY power supply connections as well as speaker
connections. What were they thinking of?

4. The matching power supply runs so hot under load I would be afraid it
could catch fire. Fan cooling is a must. (Who says you need a tube rig to
warm the shack!)

5. Although a mute point now, the HW5400 is (was) just way more than joe ham
could handle. Three PLL, two VCOs, microprocessor oh my! The SB-104 is a
walk in the park compared to the HW5400

6. Personal opinion, but the knobs are way too small. Especially the volume
and RIT knobs.

All and all, I'll take the SB-104 any day. In fact, I have 23 SB-104s
sitting in the shack, and only one HW5400.

Perhaps I'll try another one and see if it is a wacked up as the one I have
now. I know the other two I did own, were not better, just as screwed up..

Will be down at dayton this year, same spots as before, 509, 510 and 511.

I have for sale a very nice hammarlund SP-200 Super Pro along with mating power supply. I have fashioned a nice 5' power cable. The radio plays beautifully and LOUD!
Front panel almost perfect! Original black cabinet with handle in perfect physical condition but missing a little paint on top. I will include a can of semi-flat krylon or black krinkle paint which will make the cabinet appear new. I would repaint it myself, but I have some physical limitations and the radio is too heavy for me to wrestle with all alone. Includes nice copy of original manual.

Prefer pickup in Chicago area or will have a friend meet you halfway up to 100 miles from Chicago. I will include a square Hammarlund speaker (the one with the art deco squiggly-line on the grill cloth). $500 obo. Thanks for looking!

Subject: tales of trouble ie the HW5400

well boys and girls...

after spending two weeks on this HW5400 yesterday, I have come to the
conclusion that the HW5400 is the most screwed up radio heathkit ever put
out on the ham market

ah.. but your thinking that perhaps this is just one rotten egg in the
basket.

well this is number three that I have owned.

Drop by and say hello!

Decided to stop working on my HW-16 and HG-10 VFO combo
HW-16 is now running but as all this old gear, things may keep coming up.
Replaced the filter cap, and now able to receive.
Power was 40 watts, but then slumped to 15 watts or so, may be the pot.
VFO not yet hooked up but looks pretty good. Using a crystal to check.
Just running out of time to fix and now what to just operate.
Call me if interested.

How about using a simple voltage divider -
Connect an audio oscillator (say 2v at 1 kHz) across the series combination of
a 10K resistor and the transformer primary. Measure the voltage across the
resistor and across the primary.
Primary_impedance = 10K*primary_volts/resistor_volts.

This assumes you have the proper secondary load - make your best guess about
the 8 ohm winding and put an 8 ohm load there. If you aren't sure, vary the
secondary load connection and observe the results on the primary and make an
average estimate.

boys and girls...

after some conversations with several guys here on the reflector about the
possibility of using the original heathkit display driver IC on the new LED
display board..

the original driver ICs sink current. in the original version they sink the
current from the +180 volt supply.

in my updated LED version the 7447 sink current from the +5 supply via 180
ohm current limiting resistors

In the "why not give it a try" column I put in the original high voltage
driver and low and behold they work!

The display is not as bright and the limiting resistors would have to be
changed.. did not compute the values ... a good starting point would be 100
or 75 ohms...

now having said that, I will be offering the LED update PC board, displays,
IC sockets and original 180 resistors for $32 +$4 shipping.. Bare PC boards
are still $15+$4 shipping

this offer is only for the guys on this list, nothing will be placed on the
web site.

and there will be no warranty that the old driver ICs will withstand the
current.. it's a experiment.

Will be out of the office this weekend, going to the toledo hamfest..

anyone interested in this project, drop me a email..

parts in stock..

Subject: low voltag power strip aka rigrunner knock off for heathkit radios

boys and girls..

got to many hw-8s, HW-202 and SB-104s?

only one power supply?

well it's been a long winter and I had way too much time on my hands..

so, I designed a rigrunner clone. It uses the amp power poles, fuses, leds
and by pass capacitors.

the whole shebang is connected to your power supply via a heavy duty cable.
That way you don't loose one of your power pole connectors when you hook up
power to the strip.

there will be two flavors..

one is a five outlet affair and lacks any real bells and whistles... it does
have LED fuse failure indicators. Yes, it has fuses..

version two will have 10 outlets and overvoltage, under voltage warning LED
and a few more LEDS such as power, reverse polarity and so on.

Neither version will be offered at this time with a case...

If there is enough interest, I'll have a run of PC boards made for the 5
outlet first and if enough interest will do a run of the 10 outlet pc board

prices?

the board only for the 5 outlet will be $14 +shipping
the board only for the 10 outlet will be $18 + shipping

again, if the interest is there might offer a complete kit including the
power poles..

I work in a steel mill, so having been around big heavy things ( not taking
into account my first wife) for 32 years, the design for the power strip is
industrial strength!

I ran 85 amps through the prototypes without heating the traces!

both boards are rated for 40 amps..

3 oz copper traces over a half inch wide. Double sided PC board with top and
bottom solder masks. Silk screen on the top side.

the original prototype used a "maxi" fuse but I have changed it back to the
atc type because of a problem with wrapping a case around the pcb and having
the top too high to get to the small atc fuses.

drop me an email if interested...

have fun keeping the green flame burning..

From: Neil Morrison

Subject: Re: output transformers measurement. Off topic?

Basically, no, you can't do this. You can estimate the power rating
from the cross section of the core; measure the turns ratio; and
measure the open circuit impedance of the primary but that's it.

A 4K to 4 ohm transformer is also an 8K to 8 ohm transformer.

Neil

>From Scroggie:- "Radio and Electronic Lab Handbook".

11.3. A.F. TRANSFORMERS

The effective frequency band of an a.f. transformer is limited at
the low end by shunt inductance and at the high end by leakage or
series inductance. Shunt inductance, so called because it acts as a
by-pass to the transformer load impedance, is simply the inductance
of the primary. It should be measured at a low frequency, to ensure
that the effect of stray capacitance is negligible; 50 c/s is usually
suitable. Working conditions should be reproduced as nearly as
possible during measurement, as regards amplitude of a.c. and d.c.
(if any). Suitable methods are described in Secs. 9.18 to 9.22.
Leakage inductance is relatively small, and is a measure of the
extent to which the primary is not completely coupled to the
secondary. The equivalent total leakage inductance referred to the
primary is the inductance measured on the primary side when the
secondary is shortcircuited. Although it affects the high frequency
end, there is no reason why it should not he measured at the same low
frequency as the shunt inductance, except perhaps that its reactance
is then rather small.
Self-capacitance is an important parameter of intervalve
transformers, but these are now rarely used; in output transformers
it often plays only a minor part. But it may have to be considered
when the output transformer is in a negative-feedback loop,
especially since it is increased by the means adopted in the better
transformers to reduce leakage inductance—the interleaving of primary
and secondary windings. With this arrangement one may not be safe in
assuming that the stray capacitance is equivalent to a constant
capacitance in shunt with the primary and independent of frequency,
and instead of trying to measure it as such it is better to measure
the phase shift (Sec. 10.7).
The efficiency of an output transformer can be measured by means of
an output meter and a.f. signal source. The source should be adjusted
to give a suitable amount of power, measured first by the output
meter connected directly to it, and then through the transformer. If
the transformer ratio is n : 1 and its optimum load resistance R, the
resistance of the output meter should be as near as possible to n*n*R
for the first reading and R for the second. The efficiency is the
ratio of the second reading to the first, and should be measured at
the lowest, highest, and one or more intermediate frequencies.
Alternatively this power ratio can be expressed in dB (Table 14.17)
and is then called the transformer loss. For this method it is
necessary for the output-meter transformer not only to have the
appropriate pair of ratios but also reasonably equal efficiencies at
these ratios, at all frequencies concerned. If there is any doubt
about this—or if an output power meter is lacking—the measurement can
be made by a valve voltmeter or even c.r.o. across the appropriate
resistances.
An important characteristic is non-linearity, reckoned as the amount
of distortion caused under specified conditions by a specified signal
amplitude, or alternatively the maximum signal power for a specified
amount of distortion. Perhaps the most useful information, covering
both of these, is a curve of distortion against amplitude or power.
Methods are the same as for a.f. amplifiers; see Secs. 11.12 to
11.16.
It is of course most essential that working conditions or their
equivalents are reproduced—the same amount of d.c. and the same
impedances connected to the windings.

Using 60 hz at about 1 volt on the secondary and measuring the
primary will give you the turns ratio, the Z ratio would be the
square root of the turns ratio.

Subject: Re: output transformers measurement. Off topic?

While on the subject of audio output transformers, maybe someone can help me
out on this one. I need a 36 Henry choke in series with the audio plate
lead of an audio output tube. What output transformer will give me
inductance around this value? Does anyone know? (I'd like to build a
Paraset clone and it calls for a choke this size). The choke can't be too
big physically. Would a 4000 ohm or 7000 ohm output transformer have
inductance near this value (on the primary)? Sure would like to hear from
anyone who knows. That's a lot of inductance and it has to pass the current
to drive a 6SK7 audio amp. The whole transceiver is in a case approx 2 1/2
x 8 x 6 1/2 inches so I can't be using a 200 ma choke.
Thanks,

I have an IM-103 Line Voltage Monitor for sale. Works great. I've
repaired it and calibrated it to my Digitial VOM. It has had a mod done
to the sides of the case that are not noticable from the front. Front
and meter are excellent. I can provide pictures. Price is $55.00 US
funds and I'll include a copy of the manual and shipping (Canada and US

Murray -

TOA makes a very nice handheld battery operated impedance meter model
ZM-104. It is exceptionally handy when working with 70 Volt lines.

For the D104 schematic try the following ftp site:
ftp://216.24.174.245/astatic/d104tg/ Right click to download.

You will need the DjVu reader from either:
http://bama.sbc.edu/viewers.htm or
http://www.lizardtech.com/download/dl_options.php?page=plugins

The D104 connects to the SB-101 with audio on pin 1, PTT on pin 2 and
shield/PTT return soldered to the shield spring.

and can give me the info? I am interested in other mods that will improve
the performance on AM? Thanks.

I think you cut about a 6 or 8 inch piece of number 14 or number 12 house
wiring and soldered one end to the grid. Then you ran it up through a hole
in the chassis next to the side of one of the final tubes. You then bent
and moved the wire until the rig was neutralized. (I did the same thing
back then with my rig and it worked great)! The stiff wire just hung there
doing its thing.

Subject: TRADE

Hello Gentlemen,I have an HW8 that I have repaired and is now working
properly.I replaced the band switches that were heat damaged by the original
builder. These particular 6pdt units are sold by Surplus sales of Nebraska
but are not 4 gang as are the originals, but are identical.
I would like to trade it for a non-working HW9 W/Warc bands. I will be
happy to discuss any difference involved. Thanks, John KF7OM

The information on the nuvistor Ameco converters is on
BAMA at http://bama.sbc.edu

If you have problems downloading (get an error message
that too many people are using the system) go back to
the home page and "click" on the mirror site. There
are 5 times as many download possibilities on that
site.

The "W" after the model number says that it was
"factory wired". The Ameco converters were sold both
wired and as kits.

I have several of the various nuvistor converters as
well as the older "plain" tube types. These are for
50 MHz, 144 MHz, and 222 MHz. They work very well.

If the crystal is 22 MHz then the i.f. is 28 MHz = 50
MHz. If the crystal is 36 MHz then the i.f. is 14 MHz
= 50 MHz. If the crystal is 43 MHz then the i.f. is 7
MHz = 50 MHz. Also they came with a crystal of 40 MHz
where 10 MHz = 50 MHz and with a crystal of 19.5 MHz
where 30.5 MHz = 50 MHz. The last crystal was for
using the converter with the National NC-300/NC-303 or
the Hallicrafters SX-101 series which both had a
"converter" band of 30.5 MHz to 34.5 MHz.

Also, you sometimes run into one that has been changed
to use with the Heath Mohawk that had a converter band
of 22 MHz to 26 MHz. Those will have a crystal of 28
MHz.

Subject: AT1 Question

I am about finished restoring an AT1 in nice cosmetic condition, but someone
has converted it to a 6146 final. (Why, I don't know!) It works great with
a crystal, but when I short out the cathode to ground on the ocsillator tube
to use with the VFO, as instructed, the plate current pegs without the key
being pressed. I'm not too technical a type, but it seems that perhaps the
final is self oscillating? Is there a way to use the VFO without bypassing
these parts?

I would like to convert this back to 6L6 operation, but don't know if the
amplifier coils have been modified. Anyone know anything about this
conversion, or how to tell if the coils have been modified? I have a copy
of an old QST article describing conversion to a sweep tube (I think) that
requires coil mods.

Thanks for any advice!

I'm not familiar with the AT1, but it may be possible that
in the original setup the Oscillator and final were cathode keyed
at the same time, and when you placed the oscillator cathode to
ground you also keyed the final and if there is little or no RF
drive present then no grid leak bias can be developed and
thus the high idle plate current.

In the stock AT-1, the oscillator is -not- keyed, only the PA cathode.
The oscillator runs whenever the plate switch is "on". So you are
correct, the key should not be closed unless there is proper excitation.

A late reader here. :-) Just got an A9B. Noted it has a fusible
resistor in its ac supply on a separate strip not called out on that
fuzzy/bad online A9C schem, probably other changes too as you allude to.
Has a grey hammertone chassis. If U hv that schem in electronic form I
cld use it as well. :-)

"Museum" site calls 9C a '58, possibly the B is '57?

Did find a page of independent hobbyist tests run on many OPT's incl this
amp's 51-14, and it came out poorly - but his testbed was 6550's. OPT has
a reflected Z of 8k using the 8z spkr tap.

Also hv had an A-10 for a long time, hv never seen a schem or specs
anywhere, M-site only has pic. Very different from A9, 2xEL34 & 6AN8/A,
beefy horiz OPT, gold chassis w/cage, bias adj. Refurbed 3 yrs ago (&
only bench burned-in to dummy, no listen), found selection of a hot 6AN8
critical to output pwr, went thru 6-7 NOS B4 finding a nice one, though
all tested high on TV-7-D/U. AIRC the best was a no-name oddball. May or
may not relate to the pwr bottles I used (late '60's NOS Sylvania-boxed
double-halo Mullards).

Any performance reviews/remarks of these amps online anywhere (yup I
searched)? With the huge efficent cabs of the day, they prob kicked butt
with low wattage...

have checked all functions and every things to is in spec. except for the
500 volt and 1500 volt ac and dc range which are out of tolerance by over
20%. The two high voltage range multiplier resistors our over 20 % out of
tolerance. Replacing these resistors would correct the problem.
The meter movement is in good condition and is balanced. The case is in
fair condition. The left hand function knob has a section broken out of the
skirt. I can furnish a photo of the VTVM.

The only lead with the meter is the DC probe lead.

Subject: HW7 Mod

I recently acquired a real nice HW7 from a gent on this list, and it's fine.
I have a 1410 keyer, and it wouldn't work with it. Poring thru the keyer
manual I found that there is an easy mod requiring just replacing 2
resistors and switching a connection.

Here's the caution: One of the resistors was R39, which originally was 470
ohms. When I located the resistor via the circuit board drawing, it was
only 33 ohms. Problem was, there is a misprint on the circuit board drawing
(same on both sides) where R39 appears in 2 places. The 33 ohm is really
R34.

Thought I'd let the group know, so you can correct the manual in case of
future mods or difficulty. The keyer works fine with the HW7 now.

Regards to all, and thanks for all the help in the past.

Ron K2RP
