As I mentioned, I have fiddled something that works and gets me by. These knobs are obviously very scarce and/or expensive and appear to cost far more than my recently acquired unmodified BC-453-B for which I was able to add a rack and dynamotor. The set now works well. I will have to look out for another junker with a knob, which is how I found the rack and dyno! It looks similiar to the layout of the dial stringing diagram which came in the Hallicrafters S-40A service bulletin. The Service Bulletin dial stringing diagram is incorrect for the S-40A, which caused me a bit o' irratation. The bandspread dial cord was broken when I got my S-40A, but I eventually got it working correctly. If you go to qrz.com and "Get Callsign" W7NI, you can get his email address. Hopefully, Stan still has some books to sell. I followed his troubleshooting hints, and fixed intermittant problems in my 545. The problem was that "Black Beauty" capacitors in the regulated power supply had grown leaky over time. These black tubular capacitors with color coded values are used liberally in the regulted supplies of the vintage Teks, and can cause strange intermittant symptoms. I replaced all of the the Black Beauty's with Mylar capacitors found cheap on eBay. I would not plunge in to working on the scope until you are more experienced with working around high voltage. The scope has a hefty power supply and large storage capacitors, and can give a painful or dangerous jolt to the unwary. One caution: do not use regular 60-40 rosin core solder with the Tek. That will ruin the ceramic terminal strips. Instead, use Kester "Electronic Silver Solder" 62% tin, 36% lead, 2% silver. 73, Ed Knobloch zeitguy wrote: >The oscilloscope I found > is a Tektronix 585a, with 78 tubes and every single component is hand > soldered on ceramic strips. I've heard rumors that some do, but mine dose not. I have a fairly early TSB-2000. I use a LDG AT-100 Pro tuner and it is great. Fully automatic, you don't even need to use the tune button. Just set the tuner to auto mode and key up. If SWR is over your preset value, the tuner automatically initiates a tune cycle and tunes in a half second or so. The radio automatically drops transmit power if the SWR is too high at start, and it goes back to your full power setting when the SWR comes down. Don't waste money on the LDG Kenwood interface, though, mine has never worked properly. callsign at arrl.net is good for email. Article: 101924 of rec.radio.amateur.boatanchors From: "Reg Edwards" Subject: New program CONNECT Date: Fri, 3 Mar 2006 02:07:55 +0000 (UTC) Message-ID: There have been recent discussions about the interchangeability of coaxial plugs and sockets, their dimensions and their impedances. But, as usual, the magnitude of the electrical effects is never mentioned. Without numbers nobody knows what they are talking about. A coaxial connector is a very short length of transmission line but at UHF and microwave frequencies it is an appreciable fraction of a wavelength. When 1/4-wavelength long it has the property of transforming a mismatched termination to another value. When 1/2-wavelength long the input impedance repeats the value of the termination. The SWR on an adjacent line is a function of the input impedance. What is the effect of using a 75-ohm coaxial connector in a 50-ohm system? What is the effect of using a length of transmission line of 50-ohms nominal impedance when it is actually 53 ohms? With mixed values of line Zo at what high frequency does the SWR and reflection loss become excessive? Program CONNECT.exe calculates the effect of inserting a length of line in a system of different Zo. Differences can be large or small. Line length can be physically very short. For a given frequency, mismatched Zo's and a velocity factor, input impedance, SWR, reflection coefficient and reflection loss are calculated. (Reflection loss is sometime known as mismatch loss). The program is worded in terms of a connector mismatch but has other applications. Input data can be varied in small increments from the keyboard while observing the effects on calculated values. Download CONNECT from website below. It has entertainment, educationaal and practical value. Amuse yourselves! ---- ........................................................... Have the need to put together a generator. Have a cat 3208 motor and allison automatic with a pto output. The motor is the drive engine for a large boat(stern wheel boat, 65 foot). I want to drive the gen head with the pto through hydraulic pump, flow control valve, hydraulic motor to the head. The head is a 12kw that needs 22 hp at 1800 rpm to run at full load. The motor will run from idle to aprox 1000 to 1100 rpm for cruise speed. Have plenty of extra hp to run the genset, only need aprox 85 hp to run boat at cruise speed. The cat is rated at 225 hp. Would like to have some spare hydraulic umph to also run a hydraulic controlled rudders. Won't take much for that. Need to know what pump/motor/flowcontrol configuration I should look for to make this work. Also, the pto unit has an air operated engage unit and the genhead I was looking at has a field disconnect that could be coupled to the tach to disconnect if rpm to low to drive the motor at the needed 1800 rpm. I am pretty mechanically inclined and have no problem working on anything, just don't have much experience with hydraulics and don't want to reinvent the wheel if I don't have to. Any help would be appreciated. How bad is it? As I recall, these are cheap permanent magnet motors. If it cannot be turned by hand, try greasing both bearings with a light turbine oil and trying to free up the shaft. The next thing that goes wrong with them is the brushes wear out. You can usually arrange transplants from other DC motors. If the armature or field coil is bad, it's trash. --scott -- "C'est un Nagra. C'est suisse, et tres, tres precis." I try not to replace things unless there will be an improvement. Power cords can be unsafe, but the cloth usually does not deteriorate. Once caution about using an S-38 in the basement. Remember the chassis is ac-dc and there can be some conduction through the floor. More than one amateur has been killed working in a basement, when insulation failed. One of the league's heavy hitters was killed in the 30's when his ac transformer shorted out to a chassis and he became the path to ground. A GFI would be a good investment in a basement when working with the old gear. Colin K7FM
