I've already had 4 requests for pics, and I don't want to spend the day sending pics so I've put the pics on a free hosting site for everyone to see. Feel free to take a look - I feel the radio is in great shape. Any questions let me know - it played when I got it about 2 - 2 1/2 years ago and has been sitting in the closet ever since. I've been advised not to power it up again without a variac (which I don't have) so all I can say is it worked when it was put up for storage. Have a great weekend - let me know what you have to trade, looking for solid state or hybrid ham transceiver, quality short wave radio, trunk tracking scanners, or ??? I'm just not into boatanchors. VFO is in excellent physical and electrical shape. No frequencies "weirdities" although on 80 M it drifts almost 1 kc in the first 15 minutes and then between 50 and 100 cycles per half hour after that. I have heard that is pretty standard unless you leave the VFO on all the time, which I don't after a piece of test gear I used to do that with nearly burned my house down some years ago. Have you had a local ham listen to verify that the hum is present? A nearby receiver may hear "hum" that is caused by RF being carried on the AC line. The chirp could be caused by poor supply regulation, or it could be related to the transmitter. Does the chirp exist when the VFO is run barefoot, without the transmitter? I didn't know it was coming in,and the noise and profile when I figured out just what I was seeing was overwhelming. I'm richer for it, and so are all those who have the experience. I've seen a lot of historic planes and spacecraft in museums. They are very nice and all, but to see one actually working is orders of magnitude better an experience. Museums bear more than a passing semblance to funeral parlors. Interesting idea to store the B-17 in the desert - that is where the plane graveyards are. I'm a machine man, and machines are made to be used IMO. Eventually I'll have a searchable database so you can find the manual(s) that contain a particular piece of equipment, such as a DY-8. First I'll just have the major pieces of equipment listed, such as ARC-5, SCR-274, R-390A, etc. If you need a manual that you don't see listed, email me at the address at the top of the Manuals Page. It is extremely clean, a conservative 9+. Flawless front panel except for one 1/8" scratch below the RIT button. Cabinet top is perfect. Both sides are perfect except for one very small scratch on the left side. Chassis is clean, no corrosion, no smoke deposits. No evidence of modification. Two extra crystals are installed for full 10M coverage.
