I have had it since 1981 and am the second owner. This was my main rig until I bought a TENTEC Paragon and a Yeasu FT 897. Now it just sits. It includes all cables, users manuals, and the service manual for the TS 520. It has a INRAD 400 HZ cw filter, and virtually new finals. (less than half an hour on them). The only problems is a broken fastener on the cover over the vox/hv knobs on the left side and a small dimple on the edge of the tuning knob insert on the VFO-520. The paint shows some wear on the right side top and a few scratches. I have pictures for anyone who wants them. Working Condx is 10/10. Cosmetically 8-9/10. It will be packed in original boxes and double boxed. I am asking $300.00 plus shipping from 95203 (Stockton, Ca) 73, Chuck KA6UUP Article: 102414 of rec.radio.amateur.boatanchors From: Lou deGonzague Subject: Hammarlund HQ-100 tube placement chart needed Message-ID: <%sBfg.5457$W97.297@twister.nyroc.rr.com> Date: Thu, 01 Jun 2006 12:55:23 GMT I have the manual but it does not include a tube placement chart. Made by Pye, and its owner thinks its circa WW2. A galvanometer made by Shimadzu Seisakusho Ltd, Japan (try saying that when you're drunk). Its dated 1959 and has no doubt been used with the wheatstone bridge. Also what appears to a be a multi meter, also made by the lengthily named Japanese company above. Maybe about the same vintage. Its all in reasonable condition, despite the scratches which show up under flash photography. But I don't know if they work. Anybody tell me anything about these things? Product detector is produced by using a crude LC circuits - not more expensive (stable) crystal based circuits - Envelope dectector is a simple IN34a diode. National only made this baby for just two years (1961-63) which shows you just how well they were selling. Overall I'd say it was about in the same class as a HEATH HR-10B - I got mine off eBay and sold it on eBay a month later - Nothing wrong with it - it's just not that good. On the other hand I bought a NC-190 off the bay 3 years ago and I still have it. It's a MUCH better receiver plus it does SWL as well. Best receiver of this time period is still the Drake 2B - Biz WDØHCO Article: 102433 of rec.radio.amateur.boatanchors Date: Sun, 04 Jun 2006 10:18:06 -0400 From: "J. D. B." I am working on a moldie oldie - an old SBE-33 - one of the first transistor/hybrid tube rigs of the mid-60's. This rig was new when "I Dream of Jeannie" was broadcasted on NBC - 42 years ago I think. Well anyway that's what I remembered - the rig is fixed and working great - but every now and then the "PA Load" cap shorts to ground and output goes bye-bye. Old Faust Gonset used a trimmer cap for the PA LOAD. It's an ARCO L305 compression trimmer type - no value on the schematic but I am assuming its 180 mfd by the size. HV is about 460 vdc on the plates. The question is like most - 95% of my time is spent listening. Seems like a waste of energy to lite up those tubes. So I was thinking about putting a switch in back to turn filament voltage ON/OFF. Wondering if leaving the HVDC ON will strip off the electron space charge even if I am not transmitting but still using BIAS voltage. ON some old hybrid Kenwoods and Yaesu's they had filament and high volt switches in the front panel. Another problem is the VFO would drift up due to the heat of the tubes so if everything was cold the dial would be off 5 to 8 kc. This is a tiny rig 0 the VFO is 8" from the Final Section - it's pretty stable after 20 mins. Thinkin about the cost of tubes ($14.70) it might not be worth moding it - still what other problems might pop up? I still might prototype ot anyway to see what happens... The L305 has a capacitance range from 190 to 760pF (source http://www.arco-electronics.com/productline_details.cfm?view_productlineID=12&productline_categoryID=1 ) if you are considering a replacement. Not an entirely bad idea. Those Arco's are not hard to repair if you can get it out in your hands to work on it. Most shorts come from mica dielectric sheets between the plates that have cracked, shifted, or were too thin for your RF voltages to begin with. Old Arco's from the junk box (or your favorite Ham's junk box) are a source for new mica sheets if you find one or two that need replacement. I like stuff relatively unmodified, but hey, whatever you choose!
