Southern Exposure is the award-winning quarterly magazine of politics and culture published by the Institute for Southern Studies in Durham, North Carolina.

SE has been rattling cages and shaking up the powers that be in the South for nearly three decades. With the Institute, SE puts research that supports fights for justice into the hands of thousands of individuals and libraries. Not just a cutting-edge journalistic chronicler of major issues in the South, SE aims to share stories and strategies for social change and a better region.

SE has always crossed traditional boundaries, advocating the connections between jobs and justice, rural life and economic development, race and the environment, women and health.

SE was the first to report stories that became major news in national media:

• The growth of the corporate poultry industry, with its record of bankrupting growers and crippling workers;

• Food Lion's unfair labor practices;

• Environmental hazards caused by the burgeoning hog industry;

• The multi-million dollar poverty industry that offers high-interest loans to poor people;

Each issue of SE focuses on aspects of life in the South with investigative articles, profiles, reviews, fiction, photography, activist strategies, resource listings, and more.

Published by a non-profit organization, SE accepts a limited amount of advertising and relies more on modest memberships, donations, and foundation support to operate.
