I want to give Edgar Krentz a standing ovation for giving serious consideration
to a grad-level comp course. I would also agree with him on almost every point
except (to some degree) his second, about the problem of defining koine Greek.
In a sense, he hints at a workable solution to this problem by mentioning the
many different Greek writers he studied. In the grad comp course I took, we had
to write in the styles of several Attic authors, and the same requirement could
be made with some or most of the NT authors, while acknowledging that no one
author is the model for koine. Someone may correctly object that a prose comp
course normally emulates the best Attic style, but the course could be redefinedas necessary to deal with the NT.
