You're on the money. I never studied KOINE as a separate entity or as a
specialty. However, I began classical Greek when I was 14, and was
fortunate enough to be exposed to dynamic teachers who did not fall into
the practices which you noted, and who also emphasised the history of the
language, forms, and words, and of course, the value of repetition and
memory.

I don't recognize some of the newfangled terminology that I encounter on
this list, but that's probably just a sign of irreversible senescence.
