I lost the previous messages on this, so I don't remember the thread
title, but Robert Guelich THE SERMON ON THE MOUNT (Word, 1982) has a
relevant discussion of the proper translation of MAKARIOI pp. 63-67
(Matthew 5:3-12). He discusses how one's translation will be dictated
by how one views the beatitudes--i.e., against a cultic background,
against a Wisdom background, as a formula of greeting or
congratulations, etc.
