I know this is not a hermeneutics list, but having seen several posts off
topic, and since this does have value in examining hilosthrion in Rom
3:25 and Heb 9:5, I thought I'd throw this thought out to you all.
First, a description of the kapporeth:
Exodus 25:17-22
17 "You shall make a mercy seat of pure gold, two and a half cubits
long and one and a half cubits wide.
18 "you shall make two cherubim of gold, make them of hammered
work at the two ends of the mercy seat.
19 "Make one cherub at one end and one cherub at the other end; you
shall make the cherubim of one piece with the mercy seat at its two
ends.
20 "The cherubim shall have their wings spread upward, covering the
mercy seat with their wings and facing one another; the faces of the
cherubim are to be turned toward the mercy seat.
21 "You shall put the mercy seat on top of the ark, and in the ark you
shall put the testimony which I will give to you.
22 "There I will meet with you; and from above the mercy seat, from
between the two cherubim which are upon the ark of the testimony, I
will speak to you about all that I will give you in commandment for the
sons of Israel.
Now, a connection to the New Testament:
NAB Romans 3:25 whom God displayed publicly as a propitiation in
His blood through faith. This was to demonstrate His righteousness,
because in the forbearance of God He passed over the sins previously
committed;
NAB Hebrews 9:5 and above it were the cherubim of glory
overshadowing the mercy seat; but of these things we cannot now
speak in detail.
For most, that is a simple matter of looking at a couple of commentaries.
What I would like to see is comment on Jesus being the hilasthrion in
the New Testament.
NAB John 20:11 But Mary was standing outside the tomb weeping; and so, as
she
wept, she stooped and looked into the tomb;
12 and she saw two angels in white sitting, one at the head and one at
the feet, where the body of Jesus had been lying.
