Wayne Grudem, in his commentary on 1 Peter (Tyndale NT Commentaries),
surmises that the "living stone(s)" (Christ and the believers)
contrast(s) with the dead stones used to build the Jewish Temple. This
seems to fit Peter's overall imagery better in my mind - especially in
light of the fact that they are said by him to be a "spiritual house,"
and that this "living stone" was "rejected by the builders [of the
Temple?]" - than that he was contrasting Christ and them with the dead
stone idols of paganism.
