More thoughts on Bill Thurman's post:
It seems like NT exegesis is plagued by torturing the Greek text to produce
extravagantly subtle distinctions between this and that. If we stop and look at how we
use our own language in everyday speech and writing I think we would discover that most
of these distinctions just don't exist for the native language speaker.
J.P. Louw has made this point well (The Semantics of New Testament Greek, Fortress
1982) by stressing that meaning is to be found primarily at the higher levels of language
structure: clause, sentence, paragraph . . . discourse. Those who are always looking for
meaning at the word or morpheme level are "looking for love in all the wrong places".
