a) The preposition APO, outside of the Johannine literature,
generally denotes separation rather than origin. This
includes, for example, James 1.27, APO TOU KOSMOU, seeming
to emphasize separation "from the world system." Is there
a sense of separation rather than origin in its use in 1.13?
It doesn't make a lot of sense to me yet, "I'm being tested
away from God" or "apart from God", but I offer it as a
teaser for some brainstorming.
b) I too wondered about the meaning of APEIRASTOS. Perhaps
not so much "not to be tested" as "untestable"? I haven't
looked at it in other contexts, but is that a possible
meaning? And if so, what would that do?
"Don't have anyone say, as he's being tested, that I'm
being tested from God, because God is untestable
by (subj. genitive) harmful things, and/yet he doesn't
test anyone himself."
I realize I'm stretching, but maybe it will stimulate some
more ideas.
