I had an interesting experience that I wasn't expecting: several people
responded to my initial message on this topic privately, asking me for more
detailed instructions on netiquette, quoting, etc. There are a number of
classic discussions of Netiquette on the Web which discuss this point and
others; since I take my inbasket as an indication that there may be some
interest, I'll list some useful URLs:

http://www.fau.edu/~rinaldi/net/index.htm
http://www.cityscope.net/netiquette.html
http://sundance.cso.uiuc.edu/Publications/Other/Zen/zen-1.0_5.html#SEC43
http://www.montebello.k12.ca.us/Resources/Roadmap/map07.html
http://www.nyu.edu/pages/hess/docs/netiquet.htm

I don't agree with *everything* said in these, but they are worth reading.

Jonathan
