I must correct a small error I made on my posting about Lampe. I
mentioned that he was, I thought, Vice Chancellor of this
(Birmingham) University. Not quite so grand! He was Professor of
Theology here, a forerunner of another Patristics Scholar, Prof.
Frances Young, currently Dean of the Faculty of Arts, and soon to
become Pro Vice Chancellor. For those interested, I noticed that
John Bowden's *Who's Who in Theology* has a little entry on him, as
follows:

Lampe, Geoffrey William Hugo (1912-80)

English churchman and theologian. After studying at Oxford he was
ordained and taught as a schoolmaster before service as a chaplain
in the Second World War, in which he was awarded the Military Cross.
He returned to Oxford to teach and in 1953 became professor of
theology at Birmingham, moving in 1959 to Cambridge. A distinguished
patristic scholar, he devoted much of his life to the editing of *A
Lexicon of Patristic Greek* (1969), the authoritative work on the
Greek of the church fathers. His own major works include a study of
early Christian baptism, *The Seal of the Spirit* (1969), and *God as
Spirit* (1977), which sought to replace traditional incarnational
doctrine with a Spirit christology.

Good wishes to all

Mark
