I have just read the several copies of the digest that have appeared
over the weekend and notice that a message that I has assumed was
private was actually 'cc' the list. So here is a copy of my
response.

Dear Ed

Many thanks for your kind Email. The cost is pretty awful, isnn't it?
Did you know, though, that you can get it for half-price for
individual scholar's use (i.e. if not buying for a library etc.)?
That brings the price down to stlg25 in this country which is nothing
like as bad as stlg50.

I am afraid that I do not really have anything in the way of abstract
that I can easily send because I did all the work for the thesis /
book on my old, rather old-fashioned machine. The basic gist is that
I agree roughly with roughly half of Goulder's work - and achieve this
by testing his propositions, attempting to play the game using his
rules. Thus, for example, after a long analysis Goulder on the L
material, I find that a high degree of Lukan creativity is likely
(i.e. with Goulder) but that this should not rule out substantial use
of sources, especially oral ones (i.e. against Goulder).

Perhaps the part of the book that I am most pleased with is Chapter 2
where I screen all the words in common to Matthew and Luke to see
whether they are, on the whole, more characteristic of Matthew or more
characteristic of Luke. The test comes out about equal, thus
neutralising Goulder's conclusion that Luke is full of Matthean
vocabulary.

I was at my parents' home at the weekend and they were students in
Birmingham when Lampe was here, and my mother met him on several
occasions. She said that he was reputed to eat fish and chips on his
lap while continuing with his study.

Kind wishes

Mark
