Possible Help With Greek Fonts

Dear "friends",
I am writing in hopes that someone may be able to help me solve our
problem. Our 14 year old home-schooled son, who starts some college
classes on Aug. 25th, will also be taking Classical Greek I by means of
the Internet, using IRC Internet Relay Chat) and possibly CU-See Mee.
Due to his age and heavy schedule, I would like to make the study of
Greek as easy as possible for him.

The problem lies in being able to communicate Greek by this means. We
need a font that will work for both e-mail and IRC and for students who
use both Macs and PCs. The teacher, who is excellent in Greek and a
masterful teacher, says they could not find any cross-platform
coordination last year. He devised a reliable transliteration scheme
that preserves accents etc., -- based generally on some existing
standards. This method seemed to work but it would be preferable if real
Greek fonts could be used. I know new processes come out daily and
perhaps some of you are computer programmers or engineers, so I am
simply trying to make things as easy as possible.

If you know of *ANY* possible way to allow me to help my son, I would
greatly appreciate knowing.
Many thanks for your time and attention,
Sonya Evans
