SANCTIFICATION



FOLKS, I WOULD LIKE TO GENERATE A DISCUSSION THAT WILL NOT BEGIN WITH
A CONCERN OVER SYNTAX OR TEXTUAL CRITICISM.  I ANTICIPATE
THE INVOLVEMENT OF THE GREEK TEXT IN LARGE MEASURE, BUT FOR NOW, THE
TOPIC.  FOR A LONG WHILE NOW THE SUBJECT OF HOW WE BECOME MORE CHRIST
LIKE HAS FASCINATED ME.   THIS ISSUE COULD BE RAISED VERY LEGITIMATELY
IN THE MIDST OF GALATIANS 3 WHICH WE'VE BEEN SEEING ON SCREEN.  THE
ENTIRE CHAPTER BEGINS WITH PAUL'S CONCERN OVER THE DIRECTION OF THE
GALATIANS' GROWTH, "HAVING BEGUN BY THE SPIRIT, ARE YOU NOW BEING
PERFECTED BY THE FLESH?"   LATER IN THE SAME CHAPTER, PAUL IMPLIES THAT
THE LAW BRINGS FORTH NOT LIFE BUT DEATH, 3:21.  THE QUESTION IS WHAT IS
PAUL SAYING TO THE GALATIANS ABOUT THEIR GROWTH?  IT APPEARS THAT HE IS
NOT ONLY TEACHING JUSTIFICATION BY FAITH IN THE BOOK, BUT ALSO
SANCTIFICATION BY FAITH.  GIVEN THAT PAUL SPEAKS OF SANCTIFICATION IN
BOTH INDICATIVE AND IMPERATIVE TERMS IN THE NEW TESTAMENT IT MUST BE
THAT SANCTIFICATIOIS A COOPERATIVE EFFORT.  OBVIOUSLY THE GALATIANS
WERE PUTTING FORTH TOO MUCH OF THEIR OWN EFFORT WHICH WOULD PROVE
FRUITLESS.  WORKING OUT OF A GRID THAT DOES NOT ACCEPT ANTINOMIAN
POSTURE, HOW DOES ONE UNDER STAND THE PROCESS OF SANCTIFICATION?  THE
FOLLOWING PEGS TO HANG THIS DISCUSSION UPON MIGHT BE:
1.  HOW MUCH OF EPITELEISTHE IS ACTIVE AND SELF DIRECTED?
2.  HOW MUCH OF SANCTIFICATION IS PASSIVE, CONTEMPLATIVE, AND
    REFLECTIVE?
3.  WHAT SHOULD SANCTIFICATION BY FAITH LOOK LIKE?
