Thank you, Ken, for a helpful post.  I wonder, however, if Metzger's
dictum that the canon is is a collection of authoritative writings is
sufficient in itself.  Given the importance of communal discernment and
decision, it seems to me that we also have to say that the canon is an
authoritative collection of authoritative writings.  What do you think?
