An interesting comment is made in the Gospel attributed to John--Jesus is
said to have carried his own cross to the place of execution.  This does
not seem to support a definitive type of _stauros_, but if one applies it
to the "Latin" cross, then it was probably only the crossbeam
(_patibulum_) that was intended.  The question then arises whether we are
justified in applying the term of the whole  (G _stauros_) to a part (L
_patibulum_), and whether a simpler form of _stauros_ is equally or even
more appropriate here.
