Synonymy in John 21
Add to the list of synonymous pairs in John 21 the following:
ploion/ploiarion
prosphagion/opsarion
These words are substituted for each other for purely stylistic purposes
(elegant varaiation). There is little if any semantic difference in
their use here or elsewhere in the fourth gospel.
In addition, if this account is understood to be based on a real event,
it should be noted that the original conversation would have been in
Aramaic rather than Greek, and that all the variations, including the
distinction of phileo and agapao, are devices of the writer, not of the
original speakers.
