It seems to me that perhaps what you meant to say was that "if one of the
nouns (for lack of a better word) has an article in front of it, I was
taught that it goes to the front of the sentence *in translation*". If
this is what you meant, then I believe you *were* taught correctly. So,
in the last clause of Jn 1.1 this rule becomes the reason why *in
translation* it reads "and the Word was God"; and, for reasons Mr
Westmoreland made clear, why in the first clause the first phrase must be
"in the beginning" and not "the Word".
