Greetings from Berkeley, California!

I am a student at the Graduate Theological Union.  I am trying to ascertain
when the new Blass-Debrunner-Funk will be available, and a colleague
suggested that I ask at this address.  Does anybody here have any insight?  I
appreciate your help.

The answer is: NOT VERY SOON. My understanding is that SBL has appointed a
committee to work on it; one member of that committee, Micheal Palmer, used
to be an active participant on b-greek. If he still is, perhaps he can
respond. In the meantime, I'd suggest you check the following web-site in
Perth, Australia thatwas set up for the Hellenistic Greek Grammar list
which focuses particularly on issues associated with that subject. One of
the items on display there is an outline (perhaps even alternative
outlines) for the layout of the new grammar. But I think it's not
reasonable to expect it in the very near future.

I don't know the answer to this question, but it reminded me of a statement
about the construction of I-49 in Louisiana.  An LSU physicist estimated
that the sun was expected to burn out in about 15 million years and then
added, "I suppose they'll have to finish I-49 in the dark."

The rendering of 1 Tim. 2:12 which you suggest could be accepted only if the
conjunction OUDE were epexegetical (explanatory) in force. A group of Greek
scholars in our area studied this verse intensively a couple of years ago
and concluded that such an understanding was not tenable. The OUDE must be
taken as a _coordinating_ conjunction. Thus the traditional translations are
correct: "I do not permit a woman to teach or to have authority over a man"
(NJKV).

A resume of the above-mentioned study appears in the _Journal of Theology_
of the Church of the Lutheran Confession (ISSN 0361-1906), 35:3 (September
1995), pages 21-29.
