Its literal references in the NT often refer to "beggars", but what
about its metaphorical category (perhaps related to the Anawim of the
OT and intertest.). Spiritual beggars? Perhaps, since it would be
a more striking comparison. Those who were responding to Jesus and
described under this umbrella included a wide spectrum.
There is a reasonably thorough article in ABDict (V.414ff.). It does
note ptwxos as primarily "beggar" and cites other Koine terms for
the "normal" poor! But the art. also warns against static definitions
of terms, especially since the normal term for "poor" only occurs once
in the NT (2 Cor 8:9) and ptwxos is the norm.
