Regarding the issue of Junia's gender,
I recommend Bernadette Brooten's
article, ""Junia..Outstanding Among the Apostles
(Romans 16:7), " in Women Priests: A Catholic
Commentary on the Vatican Declaration, edd. L.J. and
Arlene Swidler (New York 1977), 141-4.

Brooten observes that Junia's gender as female was
not challenged until the thirteenth century by
Aegidus of Rome. She has made a detailed
study of names of that period and found that
the male name Junias (if derived from the accusative
form IOUNIAN) is unattested. This makes the
issue of accents less revelant. The NRSV has
accepted her argument and now has "Junia."
