In reaction to the posting of Eric Weiss:
1/ One time before I have send mail to this group as regards the idiomatic
expression EK X - EIS X.
In this message I proposed we should look at 2 Cor. at 2 Cor. 2,16 for a
striking parallel. Paul gives here twice the expression EK X - EIS X.
Perhaps this should be taken into account?
2/ By the way, Eric is struck by the idea the theme of Romans cannot be found
in 1,17, but in 1,16.
What about this? The theme of Romans cannot be found in 1,16... but in 1,15!

Motivation for 1:16: A quotation from the Scripture
(1,17), cf., the GAR.
Of course, 1,16-17 function as a thematic header which is expounded in the
rest of the letter (at least, till chapter 11). But the proposition by which
Paul's letter starts can probably be found in 1,15
I found the same idea in the very important monograph of R. Dean Anderson,
Ancient Rhetorical Theory and Paul, Kampen (Netherlands): Kok Pharos 1996, a
monograph which will probably have great impact on rhetorical criticism of
the Corpus Paulinum.
