I have been engaged in dialogue with a Jehovah's Witness, and we've got to
the old chestnut about the meaning of Stauros. As I am away from home at
present and can't get to a decent library, I would be grateful if anyone out
there could cite me references both for and against the translations of
stauros as "cross" and "stake".
