In the extended discussion of this very familiar verse, have we
forgotten anything? The connective GAR in this verse gives the reason
for a statement in the preceding context. May I suggest the verse
gives the REASON WHY the Son of Man must(DEI=particle of divine
necessity) be lifted up. Then the next GAR in verse 3:17 would be
inferential giving the result of God's love which produced the
incarnation which is a central theme for John.
