I wonder if the context harkens back to an Old Testament or Septuagint
use of the concept of "trial." Perhaps the kind the Lord put the nation
through when he, yes, took them out of Egypt, but no, led them around in
the Sinai for a while. Etc.

I wonder also if the idea of trial-testing has to do with the idea of
losing face. As in a prayer not to cause us to lose face. But rather,
deliver us from that kind of personal-social "evil" of being embarrassed
or disgraced.

There might be a larger socio-theological context.
But I don't know what it is yet.
