The following is the result of a search (courtesy of Wes Williams) to
locate singular anarthrous predicate nouns preceding the copulative
verbs EIMI and GINOMAI in the Gospel of John. An asterisk indicates that
the predicate noun is indefinite, two asterisks show that it is
qualitative, and three asterisks indicate that it is definite. In
each case there is some indication in the context that the predicate
noun is indefinite, definite, or qualitative.
In John 1:1, since two distinct persons are indicated (God and the
Word), the predicate noun must be indefinite. In John 1:14 SARX is
qualitative. As an abstract predicate noun it cannot be indefinite and
so it cannot be used as a proof for the status of the predicate noun in
John 1:1.
