Although L&S defines the verb as "cast into Tartarus or hell,"
cognates suggest that the root meaning may be somewhat wider. TARTAREIOS,
for instance, can mean "horrible." And the noun, TARTAROS, cited as a
proper noun as early as Homer and Hesiod, is also defined under the notation
"later" as "the nether world _generally_." For the latter, L&S cites Hesiod
again, Aeschylus (what "later" means in reference to these two, I don't
know) and the two references from Job in the LXX. Proverbs 30:16 (LXX)
probably could also be included in this category where TARTAROS appears to
have been inserted without a corresponding reference in the Hebrew text,
unless it restates _sheol_, translated Hades at the beginning of the verse.
Nicias (3rd cent. B.C.) also uses the noun in an idiomatic expression "muddy
depths" for the Nile.

Acusilaus (5th cent. B.C.), our verse from 2 Pet. and Joannes
Laurentius Lydus (6th cent. A.D.) are the only references given in L&S for
the verb. I'm working with the ninth edition with the 1968 supplement, so
maybe someone with a more recent edition might have additional info.

I hope this is helpful,
