Sorry, I forgot to name the author of "When Women Were Priests"- Karen Jo
Torjesen, pub. by Harper-Collins, 1993.

Again, she clearly shows the societal structure of palestine and the
response of Jesus and his followers to that situation. Thus, to suggest
that such questions are out of place or anachronistic is to misapprehend the
historical situation.
