This might be a good time to remind all of ourselves that there is a whole
lot more to Scripture than the grammatical syntax and the Greek language
itself. Scripture is writing. Much of it is narrative, as is this
instance. But its very nature, narrative writing records or reports the
actions of life. Life may be reflected in grammatical syntax and language,
but it is not identical with gramamtical asyntax and language. Sometimes,
we just have to remember that things happen in life, and sometimes that's
the only explanation that's needed. Is there anything in the gramamtical
syntax that demands or specifically lends credence to the idea that Jesus
was joking? Maybe not, I don't know. A more relevant question would be
whether there were anything which specifically prohibited the joking idea.
If not, than all you need to do is sit back and appreciate the story...
There are events behind the words, remember. A story. We must be careful
not to get caught up in the lines and lose sight of that.
