Larry,

For more information on time vis-a'-vis eternity, you can reference Plato's Timaeus 37c-38c.

In this portion of his work, he calls time a 'moving image of eternity'. Furthermore, we read:

"Time came into being together with the Heaven" (38b, Cornford Tr.). This echoes the common understanding of the dichotomy between time and eternity. Augustine also said that God created the universe WITH time. Jn. 1:1 does not seem to make such a separation, however, but more or less affirms the presence of the LOGOS at EN ARCH. The "beginning" discussed in Jn. 1:1 evidently has reference to the "beginning" mentioned in Gen. 1:1. Nevertheless, John's thesis appears to be that the LOGOS was with God at the beginning and shared in the creation of TA PANTA (the material KOSMOS).
