I stopped by the seminary yesterday. They didn't even have Fanning's
book in the library, not even catalogued. Zounds! I did find Porter's
book catalogued, but not on the shelves. Did some checking, however, and
discovered Dr. DeYoung, Greek prof at the school (Western Seminary in
Portland, OR) had the book in his office. I called him, he invited me
up, and we discussed the topic somewhat, as he had read Porter and a
Th.M. thesis assessing Porter's thesis by some guy named Hauff there at
the seminary.
Anyhow, I read Porter and the thesis. Others had told me Porter was not
easy reading and that Fanning was better. I don't know about you, but if
an author cannot concisely state his thesis and conclusions, I am not
impressed, nor encouraged to read further.
I know Fanning personally. He and I took took several Greek elective
classes together at DTS back in the 70s. His book should be well
written. If only I can find it. Hey, Dale, I might drop by and get a
copy from the library at Multnomah. Save one for me, ok? Sure sounds
like his book has suddenly become a hot item.
