Thanks very much, Ben, for the citations you've added to the discussion of
that phrase (hO WN KAI hO HN KAI hO ERCOMENOS). I've always assumed that
there was an allusion to Exodus 3 and EHYEH ASHER EHYEH here, and it is
also evident that "he that cometh" is a standard Hebraic formula for the
Messiah, where "comes" really means "is to come." Cf. the phraseology of
Psalm 118 as cited in Mt 21:9par:
EULOGHMENOS hO ERCOMENOS EN ONOMATI KURIOU
I don't think this is so much a matter of theology as of allusions and the
source of the Apocalyptist's phraseology. Thanks again.
