No: the past perfect (or pluperfect) tells us that Paul WAS dead at some
point in the past when something else related to it in the sentence took
place. It is the AORIST that "tells us Paul died" (as a fact about a past
event).

But enough. I'll not carry this on any further. I just didn't want to let
the misrepresentation of the past perfect stand.
