What it looks like is, as Carl Conrad has suggested, that PARAPOREUESQAI
means something different than hODON POEIESQAI. I venture that it is
saying that Jesus was passing along a road or established path among the
fields but that the disciples, who were hungry, began to make their way
through the fields themselves and to pick the heads of grain as they went.
This way of reading the passage would do justice to the difference between
these two expressions for "go along" or "...through."
