My first instinct was to expect a textual variation, but that's not it at
all. The Greek here reads:
1 Pet 2:2 hWS ARTIGENNHTA BREFH TO LOGIKON ADOLON GALA EPIPOQHSATE
as newborn babes the pure untainted milk desire
The difference between the translations seems to be that some translate TO
LOGIKON as "pure, spiritual", and others (at least the NASB) translate it
as "of the word".
Can TO LOGIKON really mean "of the word"? I would have expected something
like hWS ARTIGENNHTA BREFH TO TOU LOGOU ADOLON GALA EPIPOQHSATE if that
were meant. The same word occurs in Romans 12:1, where it can't take the
meaning "of the word":
Roma 12:1 Now I beseech you, brethren, by the mercies of God, to hand over
your bodies as a living and holy sacrifice, pleasing to God, [which is]
your pure form of worship.
This last phrase, "pure form of worship", is THN LOGIKHN LATREIAN hUMWN.
LATREIAN can also be translated "worship service" - it refers to the rites
of worship. I don't think anybody would translate LOGIKHN in this verse as
"of the word". It simply doesn't say "which is your worship of the word".
Here's Louw & Nida on the meaning of LOGIKOS:
73.5: logikos,h,on : pertaining to being genuine, in the sense of being
true to the real and essential nature of something - `rational, genuine,
true.' thn logikhn latreian humwn `this is your true worship' #Roma 12:1 ;
hws artigennhta brefh to logikon adolon gala epipoqhsate `as newborn babes
you drank the true, unadulterated milk' #1Pet 2:2 . Since in #1Pet 2:2 the
context is figurative, some translators have preferred to render logikos as
`spiritual,' so as to make the reference not literal but figurative.
