This is a very interesting question, of what is "serious" study. "Serious"
seems to be used as a euphemism here for "academic". Of course academic study
is going to rely on the previous academics, and for better or worse there have
been a lot of German academics. Using the word "serious" in such a way
minimizes the studies of scholars neither employed in nor affiliated with the
tenure track. It also gives a probably false impression of the secret opinion
these persons have of those who don't read German!
