Tony,

from a philological point of view I would take a grip on
E. Boisacq, Dictionnaire etymologique de la langue grecque (4th ed.;
Heidelberg 1950).
H. Frisk, Griechisches etymologisches Woerterbuch. 3 vols. (Heidelberg
1960/70/72). See the review by H. Schmeja, in Kratylos 23 (1978) 115-118.
P. Chantraine, Dictionaire etymologique de la langue grecque. Histoire des
mots. 4 vols (Paris 1968-1980) and the review by C.J. Ruijgh, in Lingua 25
(1970) 302-321; 28 (1971) 162-173; 44 (1978) 93-103; 51 (1980) 85-94; 58
(1982) 202-210 (= C.J. Ruigh, Scripta Minora 1991, pp. 571-632) and E.
Risch, in Kratylos 29 (1984) 93-104 (on all 4 volumes).

To my liking Chantraine is best, Frisk is quite handy, and Boisacq remains
third choice (acceptable).

Hope this helps,
best wishes,

Thomas J. Kraus
