Dear List members:

I have a question concerning the meaning of the word "proper/beautiful =
ASTEIOS" in Heb. 11:23, also translated "fair/lovely" in Acts 7:20.

KJV Hebrews 11:23 By faith Moses, when he was born,
was hid three months of his parents, because they saw he
was a PROPER child; and they were not afraid of the king's
commandment.

NAS Hebrews 11:23 By faith Moses, when he was born,
was hidden for three months by his parents, because they
saw he was a BEAUTIFUL child; and they were not afraid of
the king's edict.

KJV Acts 7:20 In which time Moses was born, and was
exceeding FAIR, and nourished up in his father's house
three months:

NAS Acts 7:20 "It was at this time that Moses was born;
and he was LOVELY in the sight of God, and he was
nurtured three months in his father's home.

I would like to know how this word was used in extra-biblical texts. What
was its meaning and how do they bear on its meaning hear in the NT? What
was it that Moses' mother saw that was more than in any other child? Etc.

Any insights would be appreciated.

Thanks very much,
Byron Knutson
