FWIW, the NIV is not alone in this rendering: a temporal connection
of the two verbs is seen also in Today's English Version (TEV), the
Revised Standard Version (RSV), and the Revised English Bible (REB).
It is true that the double KAI is found in only a handful of MSS,
plus a corrected copy of a Syriac text. This reading is rejected by the
eclectic text and by the Majority Text, only appearing in the TR. It is
also, then, unlikely that this variant reading is the source of the
NIV's temporal rendering. There are no variants at all for the spelling
of the verb in question . . . all in all, this is one of the more
intriguing questions I have seen brought up in terms of translation. I
would like to know whether any of the NIV editors are on the list, and
if so whether they remember this decision?
