To: Dave Scarpino,

You've received a lot of suggestions. You might want to go to a good
library and look at each of these books first before buying them. A good
university or seminary library would have most of them. If you are not near
a large library, most any small public library can borrow these books for
you to look at.

Of all the Greek texts, the Nestle-Aland "Novum Testamentum Graece" (27th
edition) is generally considered the standard scholarly Greek NT for
textual criticism. Occasionally, NA27 does not cover the reading for the
Textus Receptus, on those rare occasions the Hodges-Farstad's "The Greek
New Testament according to the Majority Text" can be helpful.

For an introduction to textual criticism, see:

(a) "The Text of the New Testament: Its Transmission, Corruption, and
Restoration" by Bruce M. Metzger (3rd edition, 1992);

(b) "The Text of the New Testament: An Introduction to the Critical
Editions and to the Theory and Practice of Modern Textual Criticism" by
Kurt Aland and Barbara Aland (2nd edition, 1989);

(c) "An Introduction to New Testament Textual Criticism" by Leon Vaganay
and Christian-Bernard Amphoux (1991); and

(d) "Manuscripts and the Text of the New Testament: An Introduction for
English Readers" by Keith Elliott and Ian Moir (1995).

If you like the subject as much as I do, you'll read all four. <g> But a
good first choice is Metzger's work listed as 'a' above.

IMO the best lexical aid (for help reading the Greek text) for the
intermediate student of NT Greek is "A Grammatical Analysis of the Greek
New Testament" by Max Zerwick and Mary Grosvenor. One can obtain a copy
from Loyola Press (800-621-0555).
