Some traditions equate the LOUTRON of Ephesians 5:26 with the water of baptism or the
word(s) spoken at baptism (so Louw & Nida, 53:43; TDNT vol. 4, pp. 304-307). But I
wonder how that squares with TO LOUTPW TOU hUDATOS EN RhHMATI specifically. It
would appear that it is the Word (i.e., of truth, the whole Christian message) that
performs the cleansing here. Why would that be restricted even to the "word" or
words spoken at baptism?
