Dear David,
     The reason that the generic "sin" seems better than "the (specific)
sin" in Heb 12:1 is that the writer uses "we" in the verse. He has not
discussed any of his own sins previously, even if he has hinted at some
belonging to the letter's recipients. So he would not seem to be referring
to specific sin that applied to both himself and to his readers.
