I'd say that the erroneous notion in this instance is that hOTI should
"always" be subordinate. In this instance one would be hard put to argue
that its meaning is distinct from GAR is this sentence were written, hAUTH
GAR ESTIN hH AGGELIA ... --and I'd translate it, "This, after all, is the
message that you heard from the outset, that we should love each other ..."
So far as paragraphing is concerned, I'm inclined to think that the editors
tend to be rather arbitrary about this and to divide the discourse in terms
of a target language's practice, whereas it is clear that 3:11 DOES offer
an explanation for the assertion in 3:10.
