Dear Roseann,
The verb in Lev 14:16 is not BAPTIZW but BAPTW. Clearly, BAPTW refers
to the priest's dipping his finger in the oil. BAG lists "dip" as the
meaning for BAPTW, but for BAPTIZW it gives a wider reference of meaning
that includes the ideas "dip, immerse, (mid.) dip oneself, wash (in
non-Christian lit. also plunge, sink, drench, overwhelm; [fig.] soak," and
BAG adds that in Christian literature BAPTIZW refers to "wash" only in a
ritual sense. The verb is use of Jewish ritual washings, of Christian
baptism, and in a figurative sense related to the idea of Christian baptism.

                        Yours,
                        Harold Holmyard
