Petra & Petros

The lexicons (Liddell, Scott, Jones) show difference of use with the
words PETRA & PETROS, the former seemingly refering to much larger
masses of stone and the latter to smaller, even to the size of stones
used as a weapon one can throw. I am looking for comments regarding the
usage of these two words, not only in classical Greek but at the time of
Christ and even up to modern times.

1. Did they still retain the classical distinction in Christ's day?

2. Did they retain that distinction after Christ, down through the
middle ages?

3. Do they still retain the distinction today?

Thank you for your help.

Michael
