One might expect "God" to be in the accusative if it were to be related to
"this one."
The immediate context is the miracle of the loaves and fishes.
Traditionally this occurred along the northwestern shore of the Sea of
Galilee at a place called Tabgha or "seven springs." The Church of the
Miracle of the Loaves and Fishes, a modern building built on the site of a
fourth-century Byzantine church, commemorates this event.
Jesus advised the people that the true work desired by God was not for
bread (alone) but rather for faith in Himself. Jesus illustrated this by
referring to Moses who had drawn the same lesson when God had provided the
manna:
"feeding you with manna, which neither you nor your fathers had known, to
teach you that man does not live on bread alone but on every word that
comes from the mouth of the LORD." (Deut 8:3 NIV)
Some commentators see the "seal" (esphragisen) as an allusion to the
baker's mark on a loaf. Some see it as the seal that the one giving a
banquet gave to the steward (see Nicoll, Expositor's Greek Testament).
Regardless of any such allusion the idiom "set his seal" might have, the
point seems to be that God had shown his approval of Jesus by the miracle
of the loaves and fishes.
